This unit prepares you to address trauma with an understanding of the multifaceted nature of trauma on the individual and community. Students will explore trauma symptoms, treatment and recovery; including insights from neuroscience and post-traumatic growth literature. You will think carefully through assessment of physiological, social and psychological impacts of trauma to inform treatment plans ensuring best practice.

Outcomes

  1. Develop an understanding of the nature of trauma-informed interventions based on individual and collective needs, socio-cultural considerations and ethical practice;
  2. Examine current research regarding trauma treatment and recovery, including neuroscience and post-traumatic growth;
  3. Critique current evidenced-based and emerging theories and models of trauma therapies;
  4. Evaluate and reflect on professional practice considerations in working with people and communities impacted by trauma, including collaborative client-therapist relationship and professional self-care.
