This subject explores various perspectives on the Spirit of God in the Old Testament. Primary biblical materials and secondary literature from a range of perspectives will be analysed. Students will also examine the socio-historical background relevant to the functions of the Spirit in the Old Testament and will apply passages on the Spirit to modern Pentecostalism.

  1. Identify the various perspectives on the Spirit of God in the Old Testament;
  2. Examine the socio-historical background relevant to the functions of the Spirit in the Old Testament;
  3. Demonstrate critical engagement with both the primary biblical materials and secondary literature from a range of perspectives;
  4. Interpret a major prophet’s understanding of the Spirit of God, and the Spirit’s relationship to the redemption of God;
  5. Apply passages on the Spirit in the Old Testament to modern Pentecostalism.
