This cornerstone unit in both the Bachelor and Master of Teaching courses will introduce students to the fundamentals of teaching in Australia. It includes content on the ‘what’, ‘when’ and ‘whyof Christian education and requires students to engage with philosophies of education and develop their own. the unit also helps student develop an understanding of the requirements and rewards of teaching in Australia.

Outcomes

  1. Describe and discuss the philosophies and perspectives of a range of educational professionals from Christian and other school contexts.
  2. Understand the impact of change on ethics, professionals’ roles, legislative and organisational processes and parents/carers in effective education of young people by analysis and synthesis of current educational research literature into how students learn. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of concepts, substance and structure of ACARA curriculum reform and NESA syllabus documents related to a particular subject area.
  3. Create a personal teaching philosophy that demonstrates the requisite professional criteria for a specific context. Consider how your Christian or other worldview impacts your teaching philosophy;
  4. Review teaching strategies, literacy and numeracy strategies and behaviour management strategies;
  5. Evaluation of learning goals, involving parents/carers, assessment strategies, feedback, record keeping, reporting and the interpretation of assessment data.
