Effective chaplaincy and pastoral care requires an understanding of the diverse settings in which care may be required, as well as the pillars of best practice. By learning the foundational theories and skills needed for chaplaincy and pastoral care, students will develop competence in providing care across a range of circumstances and within a variety of social, cultural and spiritual or religious contexts.

  1. Become familiar with key aspects of Christian service and ethical practice in the secular environment and current industry trends;
  2. Articulate the knowledge you need to serve in your chosen community under the appropriate chaplaincy/pastoral care models (policy frameworks) and sensitivity to your place within your work system;
  3. Compare and contrast different perspectives in the provision of chaplaincy/pastoral care in terms of their relevance to human relationships and respect for religious and cultural values;
  4. Discuss the need for on- going supervision and professional development.
