Students will explore the factors influencing children’s knowledge and attitudes towards various literacies. They will have the opportunity to delve into learning experiences and activities aimed at developing children’s oral language and emerging literacy skills.

Outcomes

  1. Examine the current research into early language and literacy and how it informs government policy and curriculum on literacy, including the EYLF (Early Years Learning Framework), into how young children develop literacy skills;
  2. Demonstrate knowledge and understandings of effective language and literacy pedagogies gained through course reading;
  3. Analyse the environmental factors that promote early literacy and discuss the importance and application of this in developing literacy learning;
  4. Discuss the learning outcomes used to guide planning for children in an ELC and show how outcomes in Early Stage 1 should be seen as a continuum of learning;
  5. Critically examine the history of the teaching of reading and how written language works and children learn;
  6. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills in the NESA English syllabus for the acquisition of reading and writing ability;
  7. Investigate the means for ongoing teacher professional learning to improve practice in the teaching of reading and writing.
