This unit equips students with essential content knowledge and skills across the curriculum including an overview of the syllabus structure for Stages 2 and 3 in Mathematics across the 3 areas of number and algebra, measurement and space, and statistics and probability. This unit prepares students for primary mathematics teaching, allowing them to demonstrate their understanding of the critical importance of numeracy to learning including working mathematically.
Demonstrate knowledge of the concepts, substance and structure of the content, assessment, teaching strategies of the teaching and assessment of mathematics. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of strategies for differentiating teaching to meet specific learning needs across the full range of abilities, taking into account the impact of culture and linguistic backgrounds of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander learners, and for planning and preparing outcomes-based mathematics programs for years 3–6.
Demonstrate an understanding of numeracy teaching and assessment strategies, and their application in teaching mathematics to provide students with opportunities to build on their existing mathematical understandings and numeracy, including strategies that address priority areas.
Demonstrate knowledge of a range of resources including ICT to engage students in their learning.
Apply an understanding of working with data and basic statistical literacy including planning, gathering and applying data to solve problems in an effective learning and teaching sequence for the purposes of keeping accurate and reliable records of student achievement and modifying teaching practices.
