This course is designed to equip students with the necessary tools to teach mathematics and numeracy in primary schools. Emphasising their knowledge, experiences, skills, and beliefs in mathematics education, students will engage with the NSW NESA Mathematics K-10 syllabus and ACARA Mathematics F-10 curriculum. They will develop their personal philosophy of mathematics learning and create lesson plans, considering both Christian and alternate worldviews.

Unit Content

Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate numeracy skills and understanding of concepts that underpin mathematics knowledge and understanding to prepare students with the knowledge, skills, understanding and confidence for the primary classroom;
  2. Demonstrate proficiency in mathematical knowledge and skills and the ability to communicate mathematically with appropriate terminology in regard to different methods for teaching and learning in the mathematics classroom;
  3. Demonstrate skill in understanding and articulating pedagogies in teaching mathematics, reflecting on practice and the safe use of ICT resources in mathematics to engage students in learning;
  4. Examine and apply a range of pedagogical skills appropriate for teaching primary mathematics;
  5. Differentiate and explain the importance of mathematics and numeracy as well as conceptual and procedural knowledge and plan for the effective implementation of these aspects to meet the learning needs of students from diverse backgrounds, including students from Australian Indigenous communities.
