To examine Paul’s strategies used in overcoming the specific problems among the Corinthian Christians from a Pentecostal perspective. Special application is made to comparable situations in modern Pentecostalism, and how Paul’s answers may in fact be addressing us.

Outcomes

1. Display a detailed understanding of the historical development of the theory and practice of methods in biblical studies. This includes:

• Historical-critical methods;
• Literary approaches;
• Ideological criticisms;
• Social-scientific theories.

2. Critically evaluate the validity, usefulness and consequences of difference approaches to biblical studies;
3. Demonstrate advanced proficiency in using methods of biblical studies;
4. Demonstrate advanced skills in biblical exegesis.

Subject Content

1. Historical-critical methods: textual, form and redaction criticisms
2. Literary approaches: literary, rhetorical, narrative and structural criticism and  reader-response
3. Biblical Theology: its origins, development and future
4. Ideological criticisms: deconstruction, feminist criticism, liberationist and ecological readings
5. Sociological approaches: using social-scientific theories to read the biblical text

This course may be offered in the following formats

• Face to Face (onsite)
• Distance/E-learning (online)
• Intensive (Two weeks (not necessarily consecutive): 7 hours per day for 10 days = 70 class hours + 170 hours out of class time for research, writing, exam preparation and execution, ancillary activities associated with completion of assigned tasks)
